The easy we make difficult, the difficult we make imposable.  Some days its so true.

I don't see a significant difference between Whitneyville and 2nd model, at least not
to invest another $300 plus .
I like my 2nd Model . :)

Main differences between the Whitneyville-Hartford Dragoon and the 2nd Model are the WHD has V-Spring, round cylinder notches and a different grip frame. The grip shape is probably the main reason to prefer one over the other and that's just personal preference.

BTW the WHD should not really be called the "Whitneyville" as the only gun made in Whitneyville was the Walker. In fact I do believe the Walker was probably often referred to as the "Whitneyville Colt" back in the day. I'm almost certain I've seen 20th Century reference books refer to the Walker as the "Whitneyville Colt". The Whitneyville-Hartford Dragoon is specifically called that because it was made in Hartford but contained leftover parts from Walker's that were made in Whitneyville.

Also, the trigger and bolt screwpin holes are not all the way through on the Whitneyville H. It's a Walker model with a Dragoon arbor, cylinder and barrel assy. It's also called the "Dragoon between the Dragoons". Apparently, the Walker was called a "Dragoon" as well.

The grip extends into the frame. Look at comparison photos between a Walker and a Dragoon.
I believe on some versions they are thinner as well.

Yes the WHD and Walker both have a thinner grip than the 1, 2 & 3 model Dragoons.  Not as pronounced on the originals as it is on the Uberti's, I think. And actually some of the originals had different styles to the way the grip attaches to the frame. The Colt Signature Series WHD comes in 4 different versions and the serial number will have an A, B, C or D next to the number.
