Mdl. 1888 reloading tool
« on: December 30, 2017, 01:45:38 PM »
After seeing Scoobie's post about his '94 reloading tool I went to find mine. Didn't come across it (pretty sure I DO have one....someplace), but decided to post this Mdl. 1888 Winchester tool.

That photo shows the repriming punch in operation.  Here is another photo showing the case in place. I don't know if this tool is for the 45-70 (shown) or one of the offspring...40-65, 38-56, etc. There is no caliber marking on the tool. Maybe the (missing) accessories carried the caliber stamp?

Hmmm, well now you got me sort of interested in yet another model of the Winchester tools. I think I will re-read the particulars of the1888 today.

I do not recall ever seeing an 1888 tool for sale on the auction sites or local gun shows.

OK mazo and anyone else interested. Here is a bit more info on this particular tool.

It is indeed somewhat scarce compared to other Winchester tools. This particular tool was the first one designed to specifically full length resize the case. And since it came out in 1888, it had a specific match with the model 1886 lever rifle, which for the first time, was chambered in the bigger and more powerfull hunting cartridges. These larger calibres were more prone to stretching and becoming difficult to extract from the chamber than all of the previous cartridges designed for the modle 1873 and 1876 rifles.

Winchester designed yet another tool, dubbed the 1891, which was an improvement on the 1888 tool. It is not quite as scarce as the 1888. However, both of these tools were soon replaced by the 1894 tool.

Ya, unfortunately mazo, you are missing the separate die body for yours. That is where the calibre was stamped. And like the decapping pins for the 1882 and 1894 modles, most die bodies got misplaced and seperated from the tools over the years. So with that being noted, a complete 1888 tool would be a rare gem to own and use.

Thanks for drumming up some additional interest on the forum mazo.

Scooby and Mazo, there is now a separate thread dedicated to these tools on Colector's Forum if you're interested in sharing there as well:
