My Remington Zouave
« on: December 18, 2013, 11:07:06 AM »
My old Zouave its a Antonio Zoli sold my Sears even says so on the trigger guard. Old style 515 grain mini-ball and 60 grains of Swiss 1.5Fg really gets the job done. Recoil is bad rifle is heavy and the BP is to me more of a shove than a smack to the shoulder.

Good loking rifle.  I remember when Sears had them.  Never got one myself, ended up with a Harpers Ferry 1803 (Navy Arms).  I did get a Zoli Mississippi Rifle, but cannibalized it for another project.

Nice smokepole, Tom. Imagine carrying one into battle (you choose; blue or gray, as both sides used them). At times if you think about it, you realize the horrendous lethality of that war and the havoc these weapons waged against both sides.

Actually, the Zouave has not been documented as being used in the ACW.  It came to the dance a bit late.

I often wonder when I send one of these huge mini-balls down range just how much damage they can do. I'm reading Jeff Shaara book Last full measure, Grant chasing Lee there were times there wasn't hardly a tree standing after a battle because they had been shot dowm.

Somewhere on the internet is a photo of a CW veteran attending a reunion.  In the photo you can clearly see the scar made by the 58 caliber.  Centered in his forehead!  I wish I could find the photo.

I love those rifles!  I look for em from time to time on Gunbroker, but they always exceed what I have available to spend, lol!

The Zouave came about too late to be war issued. I had the pleasure of shooting up an old four room frame house with my P53 Enfield. A 510 grain minie will blow completely through from several hundred yards if it doesn't hit a stud and talk about some damage. Its incredible what they will do from close range.

The zouave's are a good looking rifle and I owned one many years ago.

I'm looking for a musket, and may end up with another zouave. I'd kinda like to get a mississippi or an enfield though. I've been looking at some P-H's on a web site but they want almost a thousand bucks for them. I'm waiting to see if a certain fella shows up at the next gun show who has had a miss. rifle in .54. If not, I'll likely get a zoli zouave. Like all the other BP guns, I like them as well!.

Great looking example Tom!
