What did you do today?
Mow the lawn? Feed the chickens? Load a semi-full of cement bags? Tell us about it...we don't care how far off track or how boring! Pictures welcome! *6'

Thursday, I had two sharpening events.  The first one was a standard event, I sharpen at 18 stores in a high end grocery once a month.  The second event was a repeat customer.  I went to the local Brooks Brothers Shop and sharpened the tailoring shears for the tailors.  Good folks and they always try to sell me a suit!  Nothing they have go with my Justins.

I'm just sitting here playing with my newest 1858 Remmy .44 Brasser.  L@.

(sorry, no photos yet.....)

Max and I are going to go visit my sister Jenny here in a little bit. Just a little Family meeting over there. Might check out some yard sales over there too.
That's about it so far.....

So far, another quiet day at work, doing paperwork and general tidying up. No flights until Wednesday. It was supposed to rain like hell Friday night and Sunday, but all we got was some drizzle. Had a nice fire Saturday night, and shot the Bear Grizzly for about an hour...nice & peaceful.
Started watching 'Lonesome Dove'...up to episode 4 now. Never seen it before. I know, I know....you guys are like "What the hell, Cap'n...it's been out since the '80's!"
Better late than never, I say.

Unwired 240v single phase power from a field office that is being torn down, moved part of the circuits to a conex nearby, which required fabricating and running new conduit, and adding breakers to a different panel. Then we moved the remaining circuits to a new field office several hundred yards away, which required running new overhead power lines and dropping to a new weather head, riser and distribution panel. Then we started mounting new boxes for receptacles in the new office. After that's done, we'll mount new light fixtures in the office, run conduit to the boxes and light fixtures, and pull in wire for all of that. That may be tomorrow, or the next day, depending on how much work there is to do on the primary ore shovel tomorrow.

Hi, I went out today to see if I could locate any of the 200 crawfish I stocked in my pond yesterday. The crawfish came from a Louisiana supplier yesterday. Maybe the elusive crawfish heard they could be taxed here in New York State?  *6' *6' *6'

Some freshwater clams I ordered should be here any day.

I also took a little time to today to read some of Johnnie's BS on the Remmy board. Glad he hates Colts so we won't see him here.

Went to my warm pool arthritis exercise session today (3X a week) in the AM. This afternoon I gathered up a few guns and ammo and other stuff to take shooting with a friend tomorrow, got everything in the garage ready to go. Then got out the pop-up camper, put the wheel with new tire on, checked the other tire and spare. We will be going to a Memorial Service in N. Illinois over the weekend, kinda like a mini reunion with several good rendezvous friends.

Smoking bone in pork loin for pulled pork...

Also smoking jalapenos I picked from the garden this morning.

Had to silver solder the front sight back on my Hawken rifle. No idea how it had been attached, but the dovetail was a little too big, and the sight fell off on the range last trip.

Need to hang a new peanut feeder for the birds.

Need to make cheesecake.

Maybe sweet potato salad.

Need to make a run to Sprouts and Costco.

Made the cobbler last night, so that's done. Need to clean my .243 and the wife's 10/22.

The 10/22, by the way, operated flawlessly on these...

One of our wonderful truck mechanics destroyed our 3 year safety record the day before yesterday. This pinhead was drilling a hole through a piece of metal for a new tank. It kept flexing away from his drill bit, so he backed up the metal - WITH HIS FREAKIN' HAND! The drill bit went through the metal, and right through his hand. And then to prove his mental capacity, he pulled the drill back out, with it still running, which spooled up his tendons on the drill bit!

Bicycle. I'll post photos after lunch. I go back to work Friday for five days, then off for five. I only work 14 to 17 days a month, and get 160 hours of vacation a year. My schedule works like this: 5 on, 5 off, 4 on, 5 off, 5 on, 4 off, 5 on, etc. So my days on/off follow a 5,5,4,5,5,4 pattern. I do work 12-16 hour days when I'm on, so by actual hours I work some overtime each pay period.

Took a little ride on Saturday morning. (I know it's Monday but couldn't post until now).    This is Hawk Springs Wyoming.  Went to visit my daughter on the ranch there.   Zach (son in law) needed to check cattle Saturday morning so I helped him out a little.   We rode for a couple hours and looked over about 500 new bulls he took delivery of earlier in the week.
It was a really nice morning and we finished before the weather got too hot.   A really nice start to the day.

I recommend it.
I don't get the opportunity often enough anymore but when I do,  I take it.  My son is a ranch manager and so is my son in law so the horses, tack, and range land are accessible.  For some reason everything looks better when you are sitting on a horse.

My mother-in-law has a doctor's appointment today. She headed out the front door, then came right back in mumbling about needing a hat. Without even thinking about it, I said "You're really old. No one cares how big a rat's nest your hair is." There was a moment of horrified silence on her part before she rushed into the bathroom to check her hair.

I imagine I'll hear about this later from my wife, because her mommy won't say anything to me about it. She'll go scream at my wife about what a d*** I am.

Hi, I'm getting ready to have my daughter and son-in-law come out for the 4th. He has a 5.5" Remington so I loaded a number of 1858 cylinders with 30gr by volume Black and balls. He will even get to shot my 1866 Remington Carbine with conversion cylinders and .45 Colt. I also have a Traditions .69 caliber cannon and have the powder and wads ready to do some July 4th salutes. Also ready is a 4" S&W 625-3 .45 ACP revolver and tanker holster ready to go. I have more .45 ACP reloads than both of us can carry. I suspect I will fatigue him long before we shoot more than 200rds.

The weather looks great for shooting at my range and I look forward to a fun 4th.

My private range:

Yesterday I went through my Stainless Steel Uberti 1861 Navy getting it ready for a CAS match.  I had already smoothed the action and fixed the heavy hamer; but hadn't corrected the Hammer peening the nipples.  It had a nice deep round hole in the hammer face.  Filed the hammer face to stop the peening and put Treso cones on the cylinder.

Will probably do a little gun work on the SS Uberti Colt like yesterday, The hammer peening the nipples had already been fixed; but the hammer is still a little heavy.  After that I may do some work on an 1861 Whitney that has trigger problems and then get the cleaned .38 cases out of the cleaner & get them ready to load with BP.

Fingers, how do you like the Treso nipples?

I have not found a pistol that they didn't work great on.  I have two sets of competition pistols with Slix Shots, all my others use Tresos.

Slix Shots have not worked so well on a couple pair of Ubertis, so they got changed back to Tresos.

Saturday was the 4th and I worked a Farmers' Market in the morning.  When I got home, Herself and I made the fixings for a small picnic.  I set up the screen room in the back yard and we sat out and watched the birds in the garden and played with our dog.  Supper was bratwurst with potato salad and a couple of Edmund Fitzgerald Porters from Great Lakes Brewing.  Boring to some but we enjoy it.  Sunday was a bit more of the same.

Today, I need to take my vehicle in for service work.  The prognosis is not great so I may be looking for a new vehicle to haul me and my tools around for work.  This afternoon, a visit with her father and this evening the last of the picnic.

(I have two paper cutters to sharpen so I need to build that in somewhere.)

Instead of painting your bullets, why not moly coat?

Hi Captainkirk, the moly is good...I just want to paint them! Heh!

The 9mm lead bullets that I just did...I think they have moly on them...if so...I'm have to redo the red paint on them. That moly is some slick stuff.

Hi, it's in the low 80s today, but this morning I repaired and cleaned the main house propane furnace. The furnace failed to start in mid spring. I knew what the problem was, a plugged pilot nozzle. I also have two propane stoves so we had heat where I could put off repair of the main furnace to later this year. This problem has occurred before so I knew how to fix it. A 0.011" drill cleans out the orifice, but it takes disassembling the furnace ignition system. While I was at it, I used my furnace cleaning brushes and vacuum to get the furnace ready for next fall and winter.

Seems I have more of an air quality problem in my basement than lead projectile casting. A month ago I did a radon test in my basement. The results were high, 10.6 pCi/L. The acceptable limit is 4 pCi/L. Before I do anything about it, I need to run another test to confirm the result. I ordered two more test kits, one for the same place in the basement as before and one in a downstairs bedroom. If the test in the bedroom comes out lower than 4 pCi/L I will ignore this issue. My house is built right on top of shale that is known to be a radon source. The house foundation was dug in the shale. If the test result comes out higher than 4 pCi/L some remediation will be required. There seems to always be something to worry about.

Regards,
Richard

The highest ever reading of radon in a house was in this area. An old house was built right over an old well that went down into granite.

Going to Flagstaff in a little while.

It's impossible to sell a house in Denver if it does not have a Radon mitigation system installed.   Doesn't matter what the Radon levels are,  real estate bandits agents use it to negotiate prices down.   It's just a scare tactic.   If levels are high then an air exchange system is needed.   If not, like Richard says ignore it.

Anyway, Seamus is a Golden Retriever, he was born 22 April, 2015.  Good lines and he will make a great pet.  About wore out Herself the first couple of days.

We've been replacing ancient electrical outlets at work. Yesterday, we had three receptacle boxes all in  a row on a wall. The conduit from the breaker panel ran to the center outlet, the separate conduits ran out of each side of that box to the other boxes. In the past, the left outlet box was on it's own circuit, attached to breaker 4, and the other two were attached to breaker 6. At some point, someone decided that they didn't need two separate circuits, and interrupted the wiring for breaker 4 in the box for the center receptacle, and wired the left receptacle off the center receptacle, so that all three receptacles, left, center and right were powered by breaker 6.

All well, and good, but...

The pinhead who wired it attached the hot and neutral leads for both breaker 4 and breaker 6 to the center receptacle, resulting in three chained receptacles that were powered from both breaker 4 and breaker 6. So, if either breaker was on by itself, didn't matter which, the receptacles had power. If you tried to turn them both on at the same time, they both tripped.

Holy Cow!

We had a similar situation at work (when I was still working!). We had under floor duct systems and they were tied together in some places to separate breaker panels. We had one guy at work who wasn't careful and he did the same thing, only in the under floor duct work. Talk about a nightmare! Reset the breaker in this corner of the building and it would trip, reset the breaker in the other corner and it would trip.

Zombie stickers on a zombie truck.  A certain degree of symmetry there, preserves the unities sort of thing and all, I guess.  It should look real nice with some stickers on it, a sort of 'fashion statement'.

Captainkirk, are you playing with my mind?

Can't I just grab an arrow and shoot it?  :-H

The bow is the one I got from Mazo. I don't know anything about it...really besides it's a wooden bow. LONG bow.

The arrows at wal-mart were either alum. or carbon. They didn't have any wood ones.

The arrow tips...some arrows had tips and some didn't.

I'm sorry...I don't know crap about bows and arrows.  :-[

Casted some 20/1 lead /tin bullets and loaded up a few 38-55 WCF black powder rounds. Besides work and property maintenance, all I have been doing for the last three months is casting and shooting 3 to 4 times per week. I have several reproductions and original Winchester lever rifles finely tuned. I have decided that I will take a deer with the 38-55 original modle 1894 this fall. The rest of the lever rifles will wait for another year.

Gonna take a break and head for Cody Wyoming in the early AM hours. Been through there several times on my springer, stopped in long enough to quench my thirst and gas up, but never stayed long enough to take in the Buffalo Bill museum. I will do so now. I have slotted two full days to observe the displays of the Colt, Winchester, and Sharps firearms and accoutrements. I intend to improve on my current knowledge of the original modles.

All of the folks that I have talked to say this is the best museum by far in the U.S. regarding a full representation of the Western era. I will find out very soon. To date, the finest representation of firearms that I have seen were in the museums in Sweeden and Norway.

I have been to Cody numerous times and have never had time for the museum.    Spent several days there in 1999 when I flew a firebomber aircraft into Greybull WY for some work.  Not sure why I did not go then.    Other times I was there for Rodeo competitions and did not have free time in town.
I know you will like the museum though,  I have never heard of anyone coming out disappointed.

Paid my credit card off, turned over the beef that I have curing in the refrigerator for making jerky, cleaned the kitchen, including unloading and reloading the dishwasher, did two loads of laundry, harvested Cayennes, Jalapenos, Shishitos, Serannos, mini-Romas, Husky cherries tomatoes and strawberries, checked the pork belly to see how it's thawing (it'll be ready to cut into smaller sections tonight), and downloaded photos onto my laptop. Still have to go shopping, meet the wife for lunch, process photos, go to the dry cleaner, pick up parrot food, and clean the bedroom.

Filled a gallon pail with tomato's from the garden, cut another vent into the goat house. Been busy canning, put up 49 half pints of blackberry jelly the other day. Speaking of atvs, about a couple months ago...there was a woman with two young kids riding a atv. One of the front wheels camo off. They were on a black top road. This was out of Portageville about 5 miles. Wheel came off, flipped head over. The lady was about 30 years old. Snapped her neck. She was dead on the spot. The youngest girl was found in the ditch dead, she was about 4 years old. And other girl was found alive with both arms broken and one leg broken, she was about 6 years old. Police said that the lady was going pretty fast on that road. About 50 mph. No helmets on any one. It's a shame this happened.

At 66 I'm real savvy with horses and motorcycles, ATV's not at all, just got it last Fall. I had to ride it to town to go get a blade mount put on and at 45 mph on pavement it's like driving a clown car on balloon tires!! An old friend of mind died in an accident on his ATV 2 years ago. He had just had his back surgery,  was planning his 1st hunting trip in 5 years, was toolin' down a back road here, a dog ran in front of him and he swerved to miss it and broke his neck in the process. So, point taken!!!

Captainkirk, I'm thinking it would be a great seat to mount a gun turret in front of for the coming zombie apocalypse *6'
Havta modify the handle bars etc put it could work well!!

Got up with the birds, made coffee and ruminated on the fate of Western Civilization while I leisurely regained consciousness.  Showered and skipped a shave. Typed up and printed a couple of Orders to Show Cause and a Motion for a More Definite Statement for some folks that want to evade my last set of Interrogatories (Discovery process).  Shop stuff.  Posted over at í58 since Iím on the computer anyway and when I go back to business my ducks are magically in a row cause the ol brain was at work on business without me even knowing it was.   Made some business phone calls to L.A., Colorado and the East Coast.  Posted some more and got into a dust up with a member (probably a good guy, wonít hear a word against him) about DAís being slackers and useless (imagine my consternation, poor me) until Classanr stepped  in with a good joke about The Judgment being EveryThing  was My Fault with a picture of a hitch hiking escapee convict and so defused that; often the smartest guy in the room, Classanr.  A highly developed sense of humor which is to say he can be insightful and funny as hell at the same time; a rare talent. This is a good chance to talk behind his back. Handled and buffed on a Colt repro.  and shot some sling shot marbles at a herd of turkeys trying to tear up my grass and was going to do another piece of work but just said screw it and got on my trusty mountain bike and coasted into town.  Had another coffee and a big oatmeal raison cookie and half way up the hill hooked a ride the rest of the way home in a nice lady friend's P/U.  Read up at 58 again and here then grilled up some chicken chest and had a pretty standard day Ö and a good one. Most of mine are.  Iím like many of the boys here, never ever bored.  There is always something to do that is either productive or fun and usually both.

At night I have been reading Noah Andre Trudeauís Gettysburg.  Thatís a good book.

I know Iíve been going on like Johnnie and well,  thatís about it.

Bad week at work.

Day one - Haul truck clips the back end of a road grader and nearly flips it.
Day two - Radiator cap on a motor blows off and sends a guy to the hospital with the top layers of skin on his face burned off. Thankfully, he was wearing safety glasses and won't lose his eyes.
Day three - Very large retaining pin for a part shoots out under pressure and takes a guy out at the ankles. Neither ankle broken, thankfully.
Day four - clear, I think.
Day five - man helping install a new blade on a Caterpillar wheel dozer got his leg crushed between the push bar and the tire. Almost bled to death and was sent out by helicopter.

In each case, it appears, the people involved were doing something they should have known better than to do.

Stopped at the local Costco this afternoon. I went to the checkout with about 25 pounds of pork belly for bacon, twenty pounds of pork shoulder for pulled pork, and a dozen and a half roses for the wife.

Checkout Guy: That's an odd combination.

Me: Well, it is the season...

Checkout Guy: Which season is that?

Me: You've never heard of the days of swine and roses?

Checkout Guy: ...

As an aside, I also snagged three 325 round boxes of Federal Auto Match .22lr at what is rap[idly becoming my favprite gun store for non-gun purchases.

I have a private event on Saturday so I spent the afternoon preparing for it.  I have to take a ferry over to the island so I need to make sure everything I will need for the event is in my wagon.  Wagon...make that a garden wagon, I fitted it to hold my treadle base, machine and all my boxes.  Now to make sure I have enough sleeves, tape, labels, etc to complete the day.  Normally, I would have everything in my vehicle but decided not to bring it on the ferry.  Getting back at night can be a problem with a vehicle.  I always like these kind of events, they make me realize how much stuff I really need to take and how much stuff I DO NOT need to take.

See you guys on Sunday.

Yesterday, I was able to finish a project I have been working on for a while.  We live in a century home and the front door was a bit "windy" for lack of a better word.  Not well fit to the frame and the stiles and rails had spread a bit letting the wind in, and sometimes the snow.  A few weeks ago, I dismounted the door and stripped it of all the old paint and varnishes.  When I had clean wood, I started on the joints.  The ones that were still tight, I merely checked for soundness.  The loose ones got more attention.  After it was all glued up, I was able to prime and paint it, letting it sit for two days before rehanging it.  I fitted a temporary plywood door.  Got it rehung and noticed something we had forgotten over the years.  Maybe 20 years ago, we removed the carpeting from the front parlor, the door had been cut for it and I installed a sweep.  With the sweep gone, the door lacked about 1" from making it to the floor.

Yesterday, I was able to splice a piece of wood to the base of the door and fit it to the opening.  Not enough work to break out the power tools so I did it all with my hand saws, planes and shaves.  Got it painted to match and rehung it all in the same day.  For me, that is an accomplishment as I usually take a bit more time but I had only the one day available.  Herself is happy and so am I.

Short on sleep, getting ready to go back in. Worked 16 hours yesterday, thanks to having to repair a stinger cable on one of the shovels that a careless operator punched a hole in between a rock and a bolt.

Actually, we had to build a new stinger cable, and half our crew (the senior half) were completely useless, which left it to me and one electrical helper to do the actual work.

You might just have to get a new tighter fitting hat Roland.  (7+"

I have a few issues sometimes keeping any head cover in place on my springer too. I ride without a windshield and when I roll the throttle on and get up past 70 mph, most every thing I have worn trys to fly off.  :)

Today, I got the porch on the new addition to the homestead water sealed. Then I went to town and worked a few hours to actually earn a bit of money. Then I came home, cut a couple acres of grass, did some watering, and put a coat of paint on some trim on the addition. I would still be outside working on the place, but I ran out of daylight.

Anymore, I am getting old and slow and there just does not seem to be enough hours to get as much done in a day as I would like

My day in a nutshell...Lift/unfold the boom until the bucket I'm in is sixty feet off the ground. Rotate the boom counter-clockwise until just before the bucket hits the power line. Lift the bucket until the bottom just clears the power line. Extend the upper boom full length, tilt the jib crane, then lower the bucket until it's on the other side of the power line. Rotate boom counter-clockwise until just before the bucket hits the pole. Rotate bucket ninety degrees so I can reach out just far enough to undo the cover on the 1500 watt flood light. Holding the cover with one hand so it doesn't drop on my coworkers down below, with the other hand unscrew a 2 foot long light bulb and maneuver it into the bucket. Still holding the cover, insert a new two-foot bulb and screw it in place one-handed. Carefully close cover and latch it in place then reverse the directions for getting up to the light fixture to get back to the ground. All this in 20 mile an hour winds.

Headed into town to have lunch with my wife, I passed a couple of young, 10 or 11 year-old boys who were, for some reason, whipping small pieces of gravel at each other and laughing. As I turned the corner they were on, one of the chunked a rock at his friend, missed his friend, and nailed the passenger side window of the cop car that was following me. Lights came on, kids froze.

I imagine they didn't think it was quite as funny after that.

Had another day off from sharpening yesterday.  Herself and I got into the garden and harvested what may be the last tomatoes of the season.  About 6 pounds of good looking fruits and they will get roasted and frozen for use in the winter.

I also got to do something I usually try to do on All Saints Day but normally do not get around to it until Thanksgiving Friday and sometimes not until the day after Christmas.  I got my garlic planted for next year.  About 50 cloves in the ground.  Hopefully, the weather will let them grow about 4-6" before I need to cover them with a blanket of straw for the winter.  Then, in the spring, they continue growing right through the straw and I harvest them around the 4th of July.

I am leaving the tomato plants in for a bit longer in case some more of the fruits want to ripen a bit.

It's Friday, and supposed to be a light work day. So, naturally, all hell will break loose today.

We usually only plant tomatoes and garlic in half of the beds.  We rotate so no food crops are grown in the beds in successive years.  The "empty" beds are planted in flowers, zinnias, cosmos and other annuals.  Bees, butterflies and birds are frequent and welcome visitors to our garden.

From today until Thanksgiving, I will have only two days off.  And if I can book events, I will work those days also!  Sharpening, while not really seasonal, does have a busy season.  Usually right before the feasts, holidays and Holydays.

Trying to get back to "normal" whatever that is.   On the 15th drove in the middle of the night to daughter's house in Wyoming.   Waited while doctors unwrapped an umbilical cord from my new granddaughters neck and head, and safely delivered the baby by "C" section .   Stayed there until last Sunday.   Left my wife there and drove home so I could work.   It rained most of last week so I got two days of work in.  Should have stayed in Wyoming.
Drove back up on Saturday morning to retrieve my wife,  my daughter was having a lot of pain in her back.  At midnight my Son-in-Law decided she needed to go to hospital.   They did surgery immediately to remove an infected cyst from her tail bone.  Stayed up all night while they were at the hospital.   Daughter went home from hospital Yesterday,   We stayed as long as we could but had to load up and get back to paying the bills.
Now maybe we can get back to a routine.   The baby (my 6th grandchild) is doing great,  my daughter seems to be doing fine, so I can now concentrate on getting back to regular things until the next crisis arises.

The Maple-Pepper bacon is out of the smoker! Being cottage bacon, made from pork shoulder - actually from boneless country style ribs - it is very much like ham. I like ham...

Cottage bacon gets sliced about 1/4 inch, since it's more like ham than bacon. Bacon gets about 1/8 of an inch.

Seven pounds of Maple-Pepper bacon sliced, packaged in one pound packages and ready for the big campout, which starts tomorrow.

reat start to the trip. Haven't left yet. Found the truck had a nail through the sidewall. Trip to the tire store. Ended up having to replace the tire. Not a tire/size the tire store usually carries in stock, but they had one in stock that someone had ordered, then didn't need. While waiting for it to be put on the truck, spotted a set of 4 Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S tires marked down, in a proper size for my Patriot. I had intended to put these exact tires on the Jeep in four or six months, so I went and asked about them. Turned out someone bought them for their Subaru, and they rubbed. So, for 4 tires with less than 20 miles on them, with full warranty, we got the set for over $250 less than the normal price. I'll haul them in with the jeep when I'm ready to have them mounted and they'll mount and balance them for free.

Gotta go finish packing and get on the road.

Be outta touch till next Monday or Tuesday. Unless we get flooded out.

Realized how weak I've gotten lol. I was doing some cleaning/moving stuff around and came across my old(really old) compound bow. I haven't shot a bow in many years due to a shoulder/elbow injury. It only has a 65 pound pull but I couldn't draw it far enough for it to break.  :'(

The usual. None of which includes dropping a bomb off at Home Depot. It's not that bad a store. Apparently there was a device of some sort. The news says the bomb squad deactivated something and took it away.

Yesterday, Herself and I finished our test drive of the new vehicle.  We made the trip to Atlanta to spend Thanksgiving with the daughter and son-in-law.  Made a two day trip home and got in about noonish.  Unloaded the suitcases and etc, loaded in the crates and went to spring the dogs from the brig.  Now everyone is home and in their normal spots.  I will head out to work in a couple of hours.

At some point, I will get the boxes out and we will set up for Christmas.

Talk about startled. I was just out filling the bird feeders and had a Cooper's Hawk, or maybe a Sharp-shinned, nail a Eurasian Collared dove about five feet over my head. If I'd had my camera, I couldn't have reacted in time to take a photo.

Hi Electric, every time we don't see birds at my bird feeder we look around to find a hawk lurking. We have seen doves being taken by hawks and it happens in an instant. There is an explosion of feathers and the dove and hawk are gone. It's an amazing sight to see.

OK, today I picked out some more guns 'n stuff to take to the auction place in Prairie du Chien, probably Tuesday. The auction will be on Jan. 30, but they advertise in papers, magazines and on the 'net, so by getting the stuff in early, I will get more exposure before the actual auction starts.

Hi Electric, a couple of years ago we finally learned how to correctly cook a roast like yours. Set the temperature of your oven to 500 deg F. When at temperature for at least 10 minutes put the roast in the oven @ 500 deg. Let the oven stay at 500 deg for 5 minutes per pound. Then turn off the oven. Do not open the oven door. Depending on your oven, don't let the temperature go lower than 250 degrees, set it to 250 degrees if necessary to maintain at least 250 degrees. After at least an hour and/or with the oven temperature at 250 degrees, check the roast temperature. Remove the roast when at your desired roast internal temperature.

When done right the roast comes out very tender, even for the normally tough sirloin. Seems that the high temperature seals in the juices as the roast cooks.

Regards,
Richard

Yesterday at Costco, I had someone stop behind me so they could get my parking spot when I pulled out. Problem was, they stopped so close I couldn't back out. And the car behind them wouldn't back up so they could back out.

Result: stand off for a good five minutes until I got out of my vehicle and told the guy I couldn't back out. He was highly irate that he was going to have to drive past to let me out, and the next car was going to get my spot. He kept saying "But I want your parking spot." He couldn't get it through his head that I could not back out until he moved. Finally he flipped me off and squealed his tires as he drove off.

Not so much what I did today, but what I have done for quite a few days over the past few months. The wife and I decided to have an addition built on to the place to accommodate the kid's grand dad during his final journey. We contracted out the bulk of the work because I am done with anymore major home construction projects. I agreed to do all of the exterior and interior finish work though. (But I do think that I will take on her bathroon re-modle job this spring, and that should be the last of it.)

Dimensions are 18 by 36 feet. It is a fully self contained addition, sans a washer and dryer. The projesct got started late summer, and of course, many delays have taken place with the contractor since then. Anyway, I had the exterior finished about late fall, and all of the interior that was contracted out was completed a week or so ago. So I have been having a go at finishing the interior.

Well anyway, just to fill you in, I would rather have my nuts cut than do any kind of this work. I prefere to head over the hill with a power saw, a dolmar piggy back, a bar wrench, and a pair of gloves, rather than mess with all of the tools and crap that goes along with this type of work. I am good at it, but I would hire out to polish the mayors poodle before I would draw wages as a general contractor. I worked concrete forming, pouring and finishing for a year and a half, helped build two mammoth storage units, worked on building of a new saw mill, and helped more friends than I care to remember build and remodle shit, but I finally realized that building constuction was not for me. But since it is my own home, and I had some specifics in mind, I took on a small percentage of the work that would suit my tastes.

I regret now not having the forsight to snap a few pics of the project throughout it's growth, but I really never thought of it. Time seemed to just pass by over the late summer and fall, and into winter, and then while working on the interior, it dawned on me that I had not even recorded a single event. So here is what I have taken pictures of over the last four days. I work on the enterior every evening until the AM hours. It is all starting to come together. I got just enough done on Monday so that my daughter, who flew home for Christmas, could stay in there and have a finished bedroom and bathroom. I could not work fast enough to finish the living area and kitchenet, but she did not care one bit. ;)

A look at the finished exterior. I matched the trim on the windoews to the trim that I recently put on the refinish of my existing home. Two years ago, I replaced and retrimed every window on the place. Last fall, I retrimmed and re-painted the entire exterior. Mathcing the color and trim was a straight forward task. I will build a cover for the deck as weather allows.

A look at the bedroom. Pictures and more decorations will happen in the future. I may even replace the white window trim and base board trim with wood in the near future.
(http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b542/obrienc1/DSCN0961_zpsoddupmyd.jpg) (http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/obrienc1/media/DSCN0961_zpsoddupmyd.jpg.html)

A look at the bathroom. I took a liking to the pedistol sink. Still have to install a mirror/cabinet unit and get some globes for the vanity lights.
(http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b542/obrienc1/DSCN0959_zpswsdfkywq.jpg) (http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/obrienc1/media/DSCN0959_zpswsdfkywq.jpg.html)

Got a bit of work to do on the kitchenet yet. Have not decided on the type of cubord doors just yet. Some of the slots will remain open and have baskits in place to match our main kitchen. I might decide to make up some punched tin doors like I did in our main kithen.
(http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b542/obrienc1/DSCN0945_zpsxetdszdo.jpg) (http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/obrienc1/media/DSCN0945_zpsxetdszdo.jpg.html)

The area that will be the last to finish. Might do a sliding barn type door for the water heater closet. It lacks a header, but I can take care of that matter OK.
(http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b542/obrienc1/DSCN0962_zpsjwbc6zb2.jpg) (http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/obrienc1/media/DSCN0962_zpsjwbc6zb2.jpg.html)

Finishing out the East end wall here. A huge work bench will then be built from the center of the two windows and wrap around the corner toward the slidind door.
(http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b542/obrienc1/DSCN0947_zpsbgpgthbt.jpg) (http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/obrienc1/media/DSCN0947_zpsbgpgthbt.jpg.html)

A look at the wall and door that butts up against the existing exterior and enters into the main dwelling.
(http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b542/obrienc1/DSCN0958_zps0fsac5cu.jpg) (http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/obrienc1/media/DSCN0958_zps0fsac5cu.jpg.html)

Tounge and groove pine is fully finished on the East wall here. I got it done Monday morning. Will cut some pine and trim out the windows soon and finish out the bottom with a pine base board as well. The window trim be stained a darker color just as the wall socket plaques are. Gotta love the look of wood.

Yesterday, Herself and I went to the mall to see the Christmas decorations and listen to the music.  How things have changed.  The only decorations involved the area where you paid to visit with Santa and if there was any Christmas music, it was not loud enough to hear over the other crap blaring from the speakers.

The shops did a great job of stuffing the aisles with enough crap it was hard for me to navigate with Herself and the wheelchair.  I must say, it slightly stifled my mood!

Did you say paid  to visit with Santa?
I was not aware Santa Claus involved fees of any kind.   I do not go to Malls anymore as there are only a couple nearby so I may be out of touch on the subject.    I do know that that the Bass Pro shop in Denver provides a very nice environment for children to visit with Santa and there are no fees involved.   A free photo is included.

I heard a very nasty and depressing rumor from the Queen herownself today, Kevin...that the reason you don't see the decorations and Christmas music is because the major corporations have come under heavy fire from Muslims and non-Christians to tone it down and make it secular and all about the sales...and they've buckled, according to one of the major networks (she told me which but I forget?)

Hey, since when did this turn into a classical music forum? Actually, I am glad to see that there are at least 3 of us classical music aficionados here. We enjoy lots of music, and have a large collection of classical music. We used to have the entire Ring Cycle on vinyl that was destroyed a few years ago in our internal flood disaster. I think I need to get that replaced!

This one is 4 years and 9 months (don't you dare forget the 9 months) old. She is my youngest daughter's daughter, but my eldest grand child. I am staying with her untill tomorrow, and then I take her back home to her grand mother (my better half), whose 60th birthday takes place on Saturday. We're going to have a family reunion, 4 generations under one only roof. Mind you, we will not be that many, because there is not many left from the elders (only one in fact), and I only have 2 grand children as of yet. It is supposed to be a surprise party, and I think she does not know yet...

I thought that I would wash the car today, as it was supposed to get in the mid-50s. However, Mother Nature has a mind of her own and the temp is only (only?, in Feb.?) 40* with a howling wind. My wife said she will take the car in to town, exercise a while and run the car through the car wash. She didn't have to say that more than once, even as tig........errrr, frugal as I am.

I was thinking a 100-400L, or a 28-300L. On the other hand Sigma makes a 150-500 that is well thought of, and a 120-600 that is good.

Well, the last couple of days I have spent cleaning "stuff" in the basement. First off.....my table saw was getting stacked with all kinds of tools, parts, etc. so that got cleaned up nicely. Next is a small work table piled high. Gradually working that down and then on to the next bench, reloading area, storage, etc. Might take a couple more weeks but it needs to be done!

Took my son and his fiancee to pick up their marriage license this afternoon, then went back to the house for some grilled tri-tip.

3 pounds of tri-tip for five people. None left.

Prepared by rubbing with the sweet mesquite rub from Costco, the vacuum packed overnight. Grilled to internal of 135, then rested.

Just watching the Nero Wolf episode "The Doorbell Rang". It centers around a murder that might have been committed by an FBI agent. Near the very end of the episode, the FBI supervisor hands a cop a glass vial with a bullet in it that was supposedly used to kill a guy. The bullet went through him and was recovered from the floor afterwards.

The bullet is a cast bullet, in perfect shape, like it was just cast, and still has blue lube in the groove.

Yesterday (does that count?) I made one revolver out of two semi-useless revolvers.

I took a DGG frame (bad cylinder and bad barrel) added that Spesco brasser cylinder and barrel.  After some mods on the Spesco barrel portion I have a nice looking 1851 type .36 cal shooter.  The Spesco barrel is spotless but the cylinder needs reaming on three of the bores.

As shown in an added picture to the original posting (above), the fluted cylinder has the flutes off center or rather rotated so that one side of each bore is thin, but seems ok.  The barrel (marked 1862) has been shortened by about half to eliminate the worst of the pitting, along with a mod to the rammer slot.

Rehabbed, well, Maybe.   ^j)

I see what you mean now.   I thought maybe the cylinder and barrel might be useful for something I have in mind.  I wouldn't trust that cylinder with much pressure.   I was going to offer to take them off your hands (purchase) them but now I'm not so sure.

RE: That put together revolver.

During shooting, the existing barrel wedge loosened up enough so that I had to stop as the cylinder gap was too much.  Several times the loading lever would drop down further aggravating the shooter.

After cleaning said revolver, a new wedge was made.  Longer and wider.  Started with a piece of 2 inch web angle iron (steel).   For thinning, several hack-saw cuts were made then HF files went to work to smooth the wedge.

Notice how beat-up is the one on the right, the original.  New one on the left.

Yes, the new one sticks out a bit but this gives me plenty of "wedge" to keep her tight.  (no comments here please :-).

went tot he range today with a few buddies.  Took my walker, a revolver carbine, and my 69 cal smoothbore.  Another buddy brought 2 1858, and the 3rd guy had an 1851.  A 4th buddy brought more modern stuff.  We set up a 20 and 50 and 75 yard range with targets.

Colts were the most accurate that day, with the exception of the revolver carbine.. it beat all the pistols on the pistol range ( go figure.  :)  )

At 75 yds the revolver carbine was 'on paper' even made a few shots in the rings... the musket was on the cardboard backing  :).  At 50 yds, the musket actually was making ring shots, and the revolver carbine was doing decent.

We also had a multi-spinner target setup on the pistol distance range.

Celebrated our anniversary with dinner at the Barley Hound in Prescott tonight. Absolutely fabulous.

Started with house-made spicy harissa pork rinds, and a Scotch egg made with duck sausage. Both were great, though the harissa pork rinds were not all that spicy. Then I had the pork Citrus Osso Buco, and my wife had the Steak and Potatoes, which was a filet served on a very large tater tot. Both were amazing.

We were planning to roll down to the Raven Cafe for dessert, but the owner sent us out an order of their bread pudding, which was absolutely incredible, and I'm not a bread pudding fan.

We'll definitely go back there again.

After that, we went down to the Raven for another glass of wine, for her, and a chai for me. Listened to Michael Batdorf who was playing the Raven tonight before driving home in the rain.

Nice evening.

E M,

I had business in Arizona for a long six months nearly a decade ago.  Went to Prescott several times a week for a month.  Loved the town and scenery.  I would often drive through there on my way to other projects in other cities, Flagstaff or Bullhead City.  I don't recall the diner you mention but I did get a horsehair band from the hat store on the square.  Also the little gunshop down the road from J&G.  Saw some interesting stuff but did not buy anything.

Some day, I would like to return with Herself.

In short, my favorite lgs had a mint, or near-mint Armi Sport-made Springfield 1842 rifled musket on the shelf for a steal. Threw it on layaway.

The clerk, who is also their gunsmith, told me he'd put it on the rack about twenty minutes before I walked in.

Had to go down the mountain to Black Canyon City this morning to drop off some gardening gear - weedeater, hedge trimmers, etc. - so my son could do the yard work for my buddy who had a heart attack and open heart surgery recently.

Coming back, traffic was insane out on the freeway. Going up a long steep stretch of highway in basically bumper to bumper traffic, I spotted a jerk in a motorhome, doing fifteen miles an hour slower than the rest of the traffic, pull out into the left lane to go around a truck doing twenty-five miles below the rest of the traffic. Brake lights come on, and I slow down, almost to a stop.

Looking into my rear view mirror, I spot a little white pickup coming up behind me fast, and he ain't slowing down. Lucky for me, we're in a cut in the hillside where there is a wide shoulder on both sides of the road. I quickly maneuver onto the shoulder and the little white truck slams into the big white truck in front of me without ever slowing down. He pushed the bigger truck forward enough for me to swing around them and get past them, where I pulled off to see who was hurt.

Cops were there in less than ten minutes. They took my statement, and let me go on my way.

Hi Fingers, .38 Colt or 38 Special? Use with conversion cylinders? What revolver are you using? .357 lined barrel or healed bullets?

OK, pork's up to 150 internal, cobbler filling is thickening, BBQ sauce is thickening. Some of that will get habanero powder to 'spicen' it up.

Still have to make the salad, make the batter for the cobbler and bake it.

On Saturday's I usually sharpen at Farmers' Markets.  This summer, I have been getting more customers than I can handle in the time frame and have been staying late to accommodate everyone or I have been turning away business.  Yesterday, Herself came along and handled the paperwork of receiving and returning  items to the customers.  WOW!  More business in less time!  Herself does all the important stuff and that leaves me with nothing to do but sharpen.  It worked out great.

So.... the Zoo is counting on your wife not reading the press release?  I have been in situations where my boss expected me to work without a permit.  It rarely ends well.

We invited our newest neighbor lady over for coffee and conversation this morning. They built a house across our field about 5 years ago, but we never really met them. Got to know her much better and vice versa. After lunch we got our flu shots and then voted early as my wife is having her second knee replaced in late October. Came home and spent an hour trimming dead branches from our evergreen trees. These are lower on the trunks and will make mowing much easier. Will clean up that mess later.

Got called back into work early to cover for the night guy on the other crew who is out on investigative lead for a major "OH, CRAP" he and another electrician pulled.

We have portable substations we use to power our shovels. They are 3-phase, 12,500 volts in and 7200 volts out. The lightning arrester for the center phase was broken, so this pair went down to replace it. All well and good.

They pulled the big fuses for the substation and went to work. Problem is, the fuses are between the lightning arrester and the substation. They neglected to pull the disconnects between the line and the lightning arrester. So, when one of them climbed up a ladder and started to disconnect the broken arrester, the top end of it was still live with 7200 volts.

This guy unhooks the bottom end of the arrester, at which point the broken arrester fell apart and the top end fell across the frame of the substation, sending 7200 volts directly to ground.

Not good. That sent one very large charge of current down the line to the shovel and shorted the cable out to the frame of the shovel.

The electrician is lucky that it fell apart, because his next step would have been to reach up and grab the (live) line side thus becoming part of the circuit for 7200 volts. Also, when the cable pothead shorted out at the shovel, there was a shovel operator standing like ten feet away from it.

The control wiring for the substation, along with all control modules, are fried. It'll all have to be replaced. And we may not bother, because we have to bring in a specialist to determine if the transformer itself was damaged in the incident. If that's the case, the substation will cost more to repair than a new 69,000 volt sub would cost us to buy.

The real miracle here is that no one was even hurt during this, let alone killed, which was a very real possibility.

Looks like we are buying the house! The owner came back with a counteroffer today. We'll be out of pocket another thousand dollars, give or take. On the other hand, she's going to repair minor issues with the roof, the heat in the master bedroom, and the exhaust for the furnace. We have until the 31st to accept the offer, and another, I think, week to get all the paperwork signed and back to her. The 45-day escrow starts when we get the paperwork back to her.

We just heard from our real estate agent, who heard from their real estate agent, who heard from the home owner, who heard from their furnace guy (everybody got that?).

The furnace can't be repaired. So they're going to put in a new furnace, and replace the roof, and fix some bad fascia. But only if we give them extra week to get things done.

Our real estate agent wanted to know if that was ok with us. We said "let us think about it - 3, 2, 1 - of course it is!" Moves our closing out a week, but raises the appraisal on the house.

Just got finished rehanging the florescent light fixture in the laundry room. Sometime during the night it just fell off the ceiling and was hanging by the romex. When the bozos built this house, they didn't install a junction box for the light. They just screwed the light fixture to the drywall ceiling with deck screws.

Hi, spent most of the morning getting my accounts like internet, cell phone, Paypal, Sling, and fuel company bill pay straightened out after learning that our Discover credit card was hacked. This is the third time I have had a credit card hacked. The worst card hack was one from Canada that purchased over $5000 of wedding flowers.

We are very careful making sure the cards aren't fraudulently scanned and careful on the sites where the cards are used. I suspect that it may be one of the vendors where our card numbers are stored that got computer hacked.

Many of the charges are for large dollar items that are shipped to a location. I would think that it would be easy to catch these crooks, but the hacking is increasing. The lady I talked to at Discover said that she also had her card hacked recently.

Have you had any of your credit cards hacked?

Regards,
Richard

My Mother-in-law is certifiably crazy.

She wanted a way to write messages for my wife and I, if we aren't home. So we bought a dry erase whiteboard and hung it in the kitchen. We bought a new package of dry erase markers and set the unopened package on the ledge on the white board. Yesterday work called for me and I was out in the yard.

My MIL opens the package of dry erase markers, used one to scrawl a message on the cardboard marker package. She then propped the package, with the message, on the ledge on the white board.

We are in the process of replacing the siding on the newer addition to our old stone house. It will closely match the color of the stone. While the old siding is off, I am doing some wiring; adding another outside light fixture and indoor switch, also another outside outlet. Then I can sit back and watch the carpenters work next week.

Too much stuff to do. Gotta finish raking and bagging the detritus from the yard, and get it all to the dump before the end of May. It's free to get rid of till then.

Have to remove a bunch of little trees, mostly cat claw and sumac and dispose of them. Some of the cat claw will get burned next winter.

Have to chainsaw up a bunch of branches.

Need to replace the bathroom light fixture.

Gotta start a double batch of green chili bacon curing.

Have to prep the pork loin for smoking on Sunday, and the corn for grilling.

Need to finish cleaning up the koi pond.

Need to tack down one of the spots in the fence that is admitting javelina.

Need to dig out the rest of my tools and get them back in my tool box.

Gonna be a busy weekend.

Cool! Pics when you get it of course...

Took one ,load of branches out, one load of bags of leaves, grass, and pine needles, and one load of just junk; bad lumber, old blinds, rusty chicken wire, etc.

Now I'm double smoking a ham with a mix of pecan and hickory.

One more load to the dump, after lunch, for four loads. Then I'll be around the house catching up on other things. I have to adjust the float in the cooler, vacuum pack meat for the freezer, rub porterhouse steaks for dinner, and prime rib for Saturday, and start another batch of green chile bacon curing.

I also have to mount a new Nikon scope on my 10/22 target rifle.

I'm off for the next four days, but not really. I have way too much to do.

I have to make a shopping trip to Prescott, which I hate these days. When I lived in Prescott, I hated having to go to the Valley, because of the crowds. Now that I live out in the sticks on the edge of a huge ranch, I hate having to go to Prescott because of the crowds.

I have two more rose bushes to transplant from rickety old barrels into the ground.

I need to break out the chainsaw and take down some sumac trees.

I have to clean Babe's cage

I have to get two batches of bacon curing (green chili and maple-pepper)

I think I'll smoke some pork cushion and rotisserize a chicken.

I need to finish the lighting for the vaulted ceiling.

I need to clean the pond filter and add some sludge eater to the pond.

I was going to wash the jeep today, but the wife is taking it to work, so I guess I'll wash the truck.

Too much to do...

Made smoke...

Sorta...

Had the G-scale layout all planned. Then my wife changed my mind for me. Which isn't all that bad, as the area she wants the garden railroad in now is bigger, flatter, and better drained. So, today, I cleared out the weeds and put down some temporary track to do a little railroading...

Mesquite. And this is Arizona.

We do need to pick up another cord, or maybe two. The next batch will be cedar, if we get it from the same source.
Title: Re: What did you do today?
Post by: mazo kid on October 17, 2017, 11:44:06 AM
I exaggerated a little when I said it would only last a couple of weeks here! I'm sure you have thought of this, but you could saw/split some of that mesquite into smaller chunks to use in your smoker(s). Up here, we have to buy that in a (expensive!) bag. I have cut some of my apple wood into small chunks for BBQing and such.
Title: Re: What did you do today?

Some of it will certainly be used in the smoker. And we have two apple trees to prune this winter.

Long weekend. Celebrated my wife's birthday (and mine, I suppose). They're a week apart. A dozen guests camping at the house in tents. They cowered from the javelina Saturday night. My wife got me the entire Bloom County cartoon series in a boxed two-volume set, signed to me from Berke Breathed, with a hand drawing of Opus on the cover. I got her a docking station/speakers for her Sirius/XM player.

Got the new door gasket installed on the wood stove, and tested the wood stove. Needed to test it due to my wife misjudging how many mesquite logs would make a nice small fire in the portable fire pit. This resulted in my wife and a family friend galloping into the house with a tin washtub of burning logs to throw into the wood stove.

The brisket came out very nice, as did the green chili cheese grits. I was not as happy with the ginger-lime cole slaw. Will probably not make that one again.

Now I have to go in for night shift tonight, and the following three night. Then I have two-weeks vacation, and back to day shifts for another year.

A cord and a quarter of cedar, not including what went on the wood cart by the back door, or into the house.
