Title: Just When You Think...
Post by: StrawHat on January 29, 2016, 12:31:49 PM
Life threw us a twist.

Wednesday evening Herself was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia.  Things rapidly went downhill from there.  I have been with her and when she sleeps, I jump on line.

Those of you inclined to prayer, please remember her.

Kevin

Prayers sent StrawHat.

I have had it before and it was bad. That's why Kimmy worries about me being out in the cold weather.

Good news, Herself is on the mend.  The color is back in her cheeks and she was talking a bit.  Her voice is coming back so it is easier to understand her.  She sat in a chair for 1 1/2 hours and that wore her out.  They have taken her off the Heparin drip and removed the oxygen.  She is breathing fine on her own.  Still has pneumonia and it weak as a cat but on the mend.  Not out of the woods, but at least we're on the path.

Thanks for the prayers and good thoughts boys.  They sure helped!

Update, January 31

Herself was moved out of ICU into a regular room.  Next step is to bring her home.  The dogs miss her a lot.

The Sepsis is being treated and appears to be on the run.  The pneumonia is following the sepsis and heading out of town.  AS much as I'd like to form a posse and run them down, I will leave that to those who do it for a living.

Again, your thoughts, prayers and good wishes are greatly appreciated.

Kevin

Went to the hospital and then went to work.  After work, back to the hospital and Herself is waiting to come home.  A leisurely drive home and the dogs go nuts when Herself walks through the door.

I make some french toast for her supper and after she eats, she falls fast asleep.  Hopefully a good rest, she needs it.

Thanks for all the prayers and good thoughts.

I am just back from admitting Herself back into the hospital.  It appears the pneumonia is back, among other things.  Back and forth to the hospital is getting old.

Kevin,

Sorry I am late to the thread. I normally do not peruse the entire forum, but this caught my eye.

As I am agnostic, to offer prayers would be quite an oxymoron. I do very much hope for a speedy recovery from this round of pneumonia that Herself is suffering from.

Two years ago I was diagnosed with PE's (pulmonary embolisms in the lower lobes of both lungs, i.e. blood clots), a large abcess in the upper lobe of my right lung, and possible pneumonia. I was in the horsepistol for a week, and upon discharge was on O2 for many months, as well as Warfarin (blood thinner/rat poison) for 6 months to preclude any more clots forming in my lower legs and possibly passing to my lungs or brain (stroke). I lost 35  pounds during the early months and had to eat nearly 3000 calories per day just to gain about 1-2 lbs per day while I was on Clindomycin  for 3 months to treat my abcess (vets give the same doses to horses for various infections). That was the very nastiest antibiotic I have ever taken.

I can empathize with Herself and you for what she is possibly going through. Again, I am wishing for Herself to have a very speedy and complete recovery.

For all of the Christians here, Godspeed.

Jim

Prayers up and God speed a quick recovery. I contracted pneumonia three years ago after back surgery. Not fun.

Thanks all.

After a day of testing, there is fluid on the one lung but not pneumonia.  Not sure what it is.  Lots of testing and no answers.  Frustrating?  Annoying?  Agravating?  Not really sure.  I finally reminded one of the MDs that they are not sucking on the insurance tit with this one.  I am paying for this and knock off the repetitive testing.  He was not happy and I doubt I am well liked.  Guess I will have to cry myself to sleep tonight!

I can tell you this, the dogs are not happy their Mom is not home.  Neither am I.

Thanks again.

Kevin

What a roller coaster ride!  Yesterday, the MD in charge of the case came by and we chatted for quite a while.  The fluid around the lung was not infected nor likely to come back.  The organs are all "resetting" themselves to normal.  Bottom line, most likely we will go home Monday.

Today, I come in and something is not quite right.  Long story short, her blood sugar is damn near zero.  Many glasses of orange juice later and she is up to the dangerous level!  I go to call off from work and realize I have left my phone at home.  I make sure she understands to keep drinking the OJ.  She tells me she is cold so I drape the blankets and add my winter coat.  I tell the Nurse I will be back in about 90 minutes.  Actual time was closer to 50.  My customers are very good and even though I have had four calls asking where I am, they are all understanding when I explain.

Herself is sleeping now and her blood sugar continues to climb.  I continue to force OJ when she is awake.

I have a hunch, we are not going home tomorrow.

They are scheduling more tests for tomorrow.

As much as I want her to come home, I would prefer to actually find out why we had to come back.  And treat it.  I am back and forth to the hospital several times a day.  Early in the morning, then to work, back to hospital, home for the dogs, back to hospital, home to feed the dogs, back to hospital and finally, home for the night.  Then the dogs become velcro and it is hard to get my supper.

I don't mean to sound like I am complaining, just letting off a little steam.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.

Kevin

I can understand the need to complain/vent. You are entitled to do so, IMO.

It always takes a toll on a normal lifestyle.

The problem with doctors and hospitals these days is they (all) must perform all manner of tests so as not to be a victim of malpractice; just covering their butts, and covering their bottom line. Why does one think that there are ever decreasing numbers of doctors in the workplace?

Until we get legislation (tort reform) to preclude spurious malpractice lawsuits, health care costs will not go down but will increase. The healthcare lobby has tons of money to lobby the Congress but so far ears are deaf in the Congress, and ObamaCare is just a Band-Aid.

Well, yesterday, Herself was discharged from the hospital.  We got home about 4pm and the dogs greeted her most vocally.  She is walking much better, still a bit shaky and slow, but she was not a speed demon prior to the visit.

Her appetite is back and so is her sense of humour.

It appears the MDs have a handle on the problem thins time.  Time will tell, but I hope not to be back to the hospital in three weeks.

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers.

Wow! What a ride for the both of you. Very glad to know she is feeling better and hopefully on the mend. Thoughts and prayers until both of you are walking in sunshine.
