No longer on my list...
« on: April 27, 2015, 08:29:47 PM »
The Paterson belt model is no longer on my list. I finally got one today. It is a Uberti version and is pristine. I do intend on shooting it, just don't know when. I noticed the loading port seems a bit small fro the round ball. I'll have to give that some thought. (*3

I do have an engraved Colt Paterson #5 belt model (new), that I picked up a couple of years ago. But that one will never see a grain of powder. It is a work of art. 8)

I'll have to figure out how to post a picture... I am a dinosaur.

Looking forward to the pictures.   I have an Uberti Paterson and have no problem with the loading port.   Did you buy one of the Paterson models that has been on GunBroker lately?    There has been several for sale lately.

Yes, I got this one from Gunbroker. I made the purchase last week and just received it. I am very pleased with it so far. I do understand there will be limitations for the revolver, but I think that is part of the game. 8)

I don't look at the Paterson as having limitations but rather that it is what it is....   a very early revolver design.
Since it was the first Colt production revolver there is no use comparing it to anything else.   It was what was available at the time.   I love loading and shooting mine.   I use the loading tool to get the full experience.

That is how I look at the revolver also. I find it intriguing and ingenius. The model I have has the loading lever, so when I get around to shooting, there will be one less thing for me to break or lose... that being the loading tool. Now I have the Paterson at one end, and the 1911 A1 Gov't at the other end of the Colt spectrum. There are a few in between too. 8)

I sure like and agree with your philosphy Mike. Bullseye all the way. Enjoy these types of guns for what they are and what they were. Seek a historical and full experience and the enjoyment level will be that much more. Some weeks, I have so much fun messing with a particular gun with particular quirks that I think I should be paying some sort of cover charge or fun tax!!! Life is good!!!!!!!!!!!!

A few Paterson Revolvers and Long Arms were used in the Seminole Wars in Florida in the 1830's. Matter of fact, Sam Colt made one or more trips to Florida to sell some of his repeating arms to soldiers there.

Not familiar with the Seminole Wars in Florida? That is Hollywood's fault. More U.S. Army soldiers died in the Seminole Wars than ALL the Indian Wars West of the Mississippi River!!! Of course, while the Seminoles did manage to kill some soldiers, the great killer in Florida was diseases like Yellow Fever, etc.,

Everyone has heard of "Custer's Last Stand" but very few have heard of "The Dade Massacre" in Florida. Like Custer, it was a U.S. Army command that was massacred by the Indians. That Massacre occurred two months BEFORE the Alamo.

http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Gazetteer/Places/America/United_States/Florida/_Texts/FHSQ/5/3/Dade_Massacre*.html

Too bad Dade's Command was equipped with U.S. M1816, .69 Caliber Flintlock, Smoothbore Muskets instead of Colt Paterson repeating rifles. The battle might have turned our very differently.

The Seminoles had rifles (lead and powder) supplied to them by the U.S. Government for "hunting" purposes. So, the Seminoles had a "technological advantage" over the soldiers because they had rifles, and could remain "out of range" of the smoothbore muskets while picking the soldiers off with rifles.

The Paterson is still on my short list.
Just haven't found one reasonable, and now I'm all wrapped up with a Sharps...

That Sharps will take your attention away from the Paterson for a while I'll bet.

Mad Dog,

I think I may be suffering from an illnesses sort of like 'Spring Fever'. There is "Paterson Fever", "Walker Fever", as well as other types or strains of fevers. These are explained in more detail under the parent heading of "Colt Fever". There is a great section articulating the effects one's wallet or checking account might suffer if the fever isn't treated properly. Don't ask what the proper treatment is because not only I don't know, but I don't care to know. I think I might have it really bad. I was looking around for a remedy, but I got the old stand by "Take two ( or get two ) and call me in the morning". So far, it either is or isn't working. I don't know. Things can get pretty confusing. (*3 :D 8)

We could start a clinic dedicated to the study of "Colt Fever".
