Cut Down Army
« on: August 23, 2015, 06:36:19 PM »
I got this for my 62nd birthday. Its called the "Thunderer" 44cal from "Old South Arms. Real nice people to deal with.  The Birds Head grip feels great, having never held one before I was pleasantly surprised how good it felt. I LIKE IT!!!

Sweet little revolver.   I love the birds head grips.  I have a brass 1860 with a 3 inch barrel.  I would like to find a set of birds head grips for.

Naturally, a complete range report is required and will be forthcoming....? L@J

The 3" barrel was a choice for me and I liked the one I had.  Enjoy yours, with a good front sight and practice, it can be very accurate.

Very nice acquisition! Actually the original "Thunderer" was the 1877 Colt, was smaller and had a top strap. Many years ago I thought they were the ugliest gun Colt made, but they grew on me so much that I eventually had a nice collection of them. I also made a bird head grip snubbie '51 that I still have and shoot.

Hi, the main problem with the 3" snub is the reduced velocity compared to longer barreled handguns. See:

Mazo, You are right of course.   Traditions calls this one the "Thunderer" also even though the only think it has in common with the original is the grip.

I shot it today,12 rounds 6 round ball, and six conical (thanks Captain, they worked great!) At 10 yards elevation was right on,and shot 2 inches to the left. I was using 30gr. Pyrodex P. I might try some Triple7 next time this week end,and break out the Walker. Slow loading thought.  Fun as heck! &\?

ssb73q,thanks for the info. I got the 1860 based on looks alone.  If you think you like the looks of the Birds Head grip (looks again, must be the Tsing Tao),wait till you wrap your dirty paws around it and pull the trigger. Nice and comfee.
