Size matters
« on: January 31, 2016, 08:24:32 AM »
I'm searching for my next CSA revolver and settled on a Griswold & Gunnison.
If I gets a Pietta built repro, are they a little smaller frame than the .44?
I had a Pietta so called Navy in .44 , but I gave it to my Grandson so
have nothing to compare it to.
I do have a 1851 Navy .36 made by Pietta for Navy Arms  built in 1978. Would the
G&G be same size ?

The frame is the same size as the .44, it's just not rebated. The grip frame is smaller than the .44. The so called 44 navy uses the 1860 grip frame. The navies and the G&G have the same size grip frame as the 73 Colt does.

The two differences you will find are the brass frame and the round barrel.
Now, the thing is during the 37 years that went by since your 1851 was built, Pietta changed their production lines and went to all computer driven machinery. Therefore specifications have changed, and your 2016 G&G measurements may differ slightly from your 1978 Navy.

I swear, the sexiest little G&G I ever laid eyes on was one I brought back from the dead and then sold. Wish I hadn't. It was Uberti 'Sheriff' model.

I'm researching for my next gun, and came across this. I like the Uberti Sheriff model with round barrel.
Can't find any current info on it though, maybe not being made any longer.
Kirk, was it a .36 ?

Yes, it was...as evidenced by the non-rebated cylinder and uncut water table. If I was smart I would have kept it and searched for a steel Navy frame and made a Leech & Rigdon out of it. L@J
