Richard, I don't think applying Kasenit would harden the hand to the point where it would wear the ratchet out...like nitriding, it only hardens a few thousandths depth on the outer surface to keep the wear down.I think it would do just the trick for you.

It could wear the ratchet, not saying it will but it could. Case hardening is only a couple thousandths deep but it's so hard you cant cut it with a file. When you put a hardened surface against a softer surface the soft surface is going to be the only thing that wears. It's like putting chrome rings in a car engine. The rings don't wear is why engines last longer with them but the cylinders do wear much faster.
