the last Civil War veteran to actively serve in the U.S. Army: John Lincoln Clem

Clem joined the Union Army at the age of 9 (first as an unofficial drummer boy), and served in Co. C, 22nd Michigan Infantry Regiment from May 1, 1863 to September 19, 1864. By the time Clem retired from the Army in 1915 he had attained the rank of Brigadier General. USA
