I went to the range yesterday afternoon. I know I’m breaking a cardinal rule, but I changed more than one thing at a time. I gave the crown a light lick, and added an iris to my shooting glasses. I think the iris was what made the biggest improvement. I’m still getting the odd shreaded patch, so I don’t think the crown was the problem. Anyway, one ragged hole 5 shot group. Mind you, at 50’that’s what a person should expect. There’s still room for improvement, but we’re on our way to better things. Another thing, this session put me over 100 shots through this gun, so maybe the barrel’s getting broke in somewhat too. Only time will tell, but I’m feeling better about things.

I have no idea what i am talking about but helped my ML shoot better was blowing down the barrel between shots and cleaning the barrel after loading.

Sounds like yur gettin' there S4B ... I mean the tearin' patches ... the ragged hole is right on ...and I believe another 100 shots the torn patch will be gone.

Try the .319 ball till it's broken in?? Might seal the gases better. Try 18gr. powder? The 21gr. load is about what a 36 cal. takes for a standard type load. Try a little less like 18gr.FFFg or even 15gr.FFFg. Try FFg powder? Wipe the bore after every shot while testing? Try a damp patch on top a card wad that's on the powder. Let me use the rifle for a few years to hunt squirrels?

Let's see. As far as powder charges go, I tried 15, 22, and 30 grains. Those are the spouts I had.
I tried .310" and .315" ball cause that's what I had.
I tried spit-patch and pre-lubed.
I tried square patches, and cut at the muzzle.
I tried lubed and un-lubed felt wads over the powder.
I did not try a damp patch over the powder and wad, nor did I swab after every shot.
I sent the rifle to you for you to use, but it came back marked "Return To Sender"

Made it to the range this afternoon. Took the Cherokee again. Used the balls from my new .311 mold, cast with dead soft lead.
There's probably less than 150 rounds through this gun, so I think it's still in the break-in period. Again, I loaded spit patch, with loads from 14 to 28 grains of 3F.
From 25 yards off the bench, almost all shots were kept in a 2" circle. 18 grains was pretty good, but just before I packed up, I tried 3 shots with 28 grains. They were in a 1" circle.
Too soon to tell, but I definitely will be trying that load again.

Well, 1" might sound impressive, but I believe I can wring more out of it. With my eyesight, I might not get it much better, but I aim to try.

Well yur doin' better than me S4B...I was tryin' for today at the Range, but it din't happen. I wanted to check them Revs out ... but for some reason I was tossed and turn around in bed till about 5AM.
With any luck I'll make it Friday ... and was Bringin' my .50 cal Hawken Carbine too. I'm gonna repair an old shot up target board, no that won't work it ... I shoot bean cans and Milk Jugs cause they fit in my Old Lexus' trunk... maybe I can hook up a take down Target Board with some stuff I have here.
I'll figure somethin' out...just let me get there please
