Been doing some poking around and found one of my ancestors was

Moses Scott Riley - Sergeant in Capt. John Carlins' "D" Company, 1st Regiment Virginia Light
Artillery.

Guess i need to move this to the Union board - I found out this was a West Virginia union unit

Naw Joel it's cool where it is, but if you like let me know and I'll move it for you. Southern amd Northern Men alike fought on both sides of the Mason Dixon Line and wore Grey or Blue as they felt the need.
I have a Great great grandfather that was killed in Battle and most likely for the North...I have a hard time pinning down his exact location and Unit though.

did you contact thru a website for Civil War Records of him?

I contacted the military records division and got some info- on my father, about a month ago.
He was in WW2.

Hi

I started with one that does mainly Confederate records as I thought Virginia was Confederate. They are the ones that told me it was West Virginia and Union but it fits with the other information i found. I am going to persue it further
