Went shooting two days in a row went to a local range on Monday. Tuesday a buddy and i went shooting up above Sonora in the forest. The weather was great. I have not shot my CVA Bobcat in two years i lost my front fire sight so i put the stock sights back on. I tried 50, 60 and 70 gr loads all shot great i shot from 15yds to 50yds i was able to shoot 1 1/2 to 2inch 5 shot groups offhand. You might say that is not that good but you have not seen me shoot. I have allways shot off a bench. Offhand is a lot more fun. This my frist and only BP powder rifle it is capable of shooting cloverleafs if i did my part. This rifle is funny if i squab the barrel in between shots the fouling plugs up the breach so what do is load it using Hopes #9 BP solvent for lube and then i run both sides of a patch that has solvent on it down the barrel  and then i do the same with a dry patch. Oh well this probably sounds strange but it works for me. We all so shot our cap and ball revolvers and my buddy's 45Colt pump action rifle that is a sweet rifle. Hopefully we can go up to the hills and shoot again next week we had a great time.

Dam, 1.5-2 inch groups off-hand, I'd be real happy with that.
If spring ever shows up here in the Rockies, I'll be back out. Got the itch too, docha know.  Wink

I still have some snow in my backyard.  My gun club finally opened the road.  I've been walking the mile down to the club and shooting the Mosin Nagant.  It's alot easier than carting the BP stuff in, though I like the BP much better (doesn't hurt as much to shoot).
Won't be long now (that's what the monkey said when he got his tail caught in the lawnmower).

Spring has sprung
The grass has ris
I wonder where
The flowers is

Yep, cabin fever.

The Mosin ammo is cheap - I bought 440 rounds for about $100 (shipped to Massachusetts which is amazing).  That's comparable in price to shooting roundballs.  But there's no comparing the smoke and flame and heavy push of BP shooting.

The weather is showing signs of spring here in Ohio.  The frost is gone from the soil and a nice layer of mud is here from the April rains we've been having.  The good news is, the garden will benefit from the rain.

Not sure when or even if I will get out shooting this year.  (Everything I have is sighted in and money is tight so I don't shoot ammo unless I am making meat.)  It seems when the time is there, the money isn't and when the money's around, my free time is limited.  Right now, money and free time are both tight!  I hope you guys that do get out write about it because it makes for good reading with the mornings first couple of cups.

SH, Sorry to hear about your hard times. I am disabled and have too much time on my hands. I went shooting Monday and Tuesday now it will take me the rest of the week to recover.

SG,
Most 303 surplus ammo is junk AKA click bang. I mainly shoot reduced hand loads in my Enfield. 13gr Red Dot. I want to start casting my own fat 30s for 303 and 7.62x54R. I also want to try Trail Boss powder you can use it with jacketed and cast bullets. They say you can load any thing with it. Just fill the case with powder to were the bottom of the bullet will after seating it. Pour out the powder and weight it that is your max load 70% of that in your starting load.

I have bought and sold a lot of Mosin Nagants the best Nagants i have owned are the Finnish M39s. The post war carbines are mostly new all the ones i have cleaned up have no copper in the barrels and the Russians did not clean up their rifles very good before packing them up. A lot of the old nagants that they sold cheap ( the black ugly rifles) were good shooters a lot of them still have the brass bedding shims. My theory is they packed up the good shooting rifles with out rearsonaling them.

Thanks for the info on both the .303 ammo and the Mosin Nangets...if ya ever have a M39 or other Russain carbine for sale or trade give me a dollar figure and we'll go from there as I do want one.
I found out from a a friend of mine an FFL dealer while at Stater Bros. that Rifles alone or pre 1899 Revs and Curios need no registration here in CA as long as it's a private party deal... Rifles are only registered initally and paper work or tracking is not kept.
So I'm lookin' for a Mosin and a Winchester or Marlin Lever Action right now...30 Win, 45Colt, or 45/70 would be alright  to buy or trade for/with.
Any ontakers contact me.

For some reason, there's alot of cheap Mosin Nagants in Maine.  I paid $99 for mine at Cabalas.  My son got his further up in Maine for $125 but it came with all the goodies - cleaning kit, bayonet, etc.
My club is having a WW2 weapons shoot this weekend (postponed from a few months ago).  If I go, I'll use the Mosin and borrow a .45 or .9mm.
It takes me a few days to get rid of the neck pain after I shoot the Mosin.  I usually shoot 40 rounds at a time, when 20 would make more sense.  But they're fun as hell to shoot.

Went shooting again today Shot my Walker with my 45Colt cylinder, 1860 Colt, NMA, 94 Winchester 30-30 with Trail boss loads fun and my CVA Bobcat 50cal ML. Had a great time. Last week on a forum i saw a pic of a thumb screw receiver peep sight. So i drilled and taped the barrel tang (i am not sure what you call it) And drilled a hole in a thumb screw to make the sight. I used a nut for the jam nut i want to find knurled nut to replace it. The sight is adjustable and is very clear even with my bad eyes. The target is the target i sighted it in with the two holes on the bottom were my first two shots the two holes that are a little higher were my next two shots the rest were in the ten ring except the one flyer to the left. I don't know what happend there. Nice 50yd target for a 50.00 rifle. lol3
