More Marlin
« on: May 21, 2016, 11:07:55 PM »
Had the Marlin out again today. This makes for the fourth time since I got it this past spring. It is for sure a satisfying purchase. The 1894 patent reloading tool is also working out extremely well. All of the old fouling is now clear from the bore. The minor pitting is causing no major issue. A 10 shot sting is fully doable before a swabbing is due. The wood has taken a good dose of slow oil over the past few months and now has a refurbished warm sheen to it. The sights are now relegated to point of aim. You can stand on your hind legs and shoot a very respectable offhand group at 60 yards any day of the week with it. Would be no problem to take a deer with a sound rest at 150 yards. A sound old relic it is. Glad I decided to go to that gun show on a whim. Have not been to it in years.

Beautiful! There is a 38-55 Marlin in excellent condition just like yours for sale in the local antique store near me and it is very tempting. They want $1500 for it.

Steve, that sounds like a right stout cartridge out a rifle.
Have you hunted with it yet?

Not yet Kirk. I have only had it since March. I might take it out next fall, but I already have a couple others slotted to go that have not been used yet to take game.

Bishop, if it has a good bore, it would be worth it. You might even be able to talk them down some on the price.
