New grips for the Navy
« on: August 06, 2019, 02:59:49 PM »
A while back, some of the fellas were talking about American Holly for grip material. As I really like the look of ivory, but surely can't afford it, Holly looked like a possible alternative.

I believe it was Richard that posted a link to an eBay seller that offered American Holly blanks. So I checked it out and bought one. It was very reasonably priced for a good size hunk of wood. Plenty of material to make a set of grips from.

This Navy is a classy looking piece to me. It has the blued steel BS/TG and it just screams for an Ivory grip. Pure class. So I got started on the project today. I'm no woodworker by any means, and I didn't make a lot of headway. But I'll keep posting my progress as I go. If it turns out ugly, I can trash the grips and no harm done. The wood was cheap. So sit tight and we'll see how it goes.

Thanks Miguel!

I got plenty of time. Patience, I'm not so sure about.  (7+"

Any further progress ? I think ( I know) real wood makes for a much better material for grips on our
old style guns . Plastic yuck.........

Nothing yet Hewy. Constant interruptions with the kids back to school. I'll get it though.

Yeah but sometimes the right plastic or polymer looks pretty good.

I agree Hawg. I've actually been thinking of making some urethane resin grips. I did a lot of mold making and resin casting in my slot car days. I've been thinking about making a mold from some grips and casting them. They would look like mellowed ivory. We'll see how it goes.

Hawg you got me, those look great. When the plastic is molded to simulate antlers as nice as those.
I was referring to plain white plastic, guess I should have said that. ($!
