Yeah, I can't quite fathom how that would be either practical or comfortable. McQueen's Mare's Leg on "Wanted: Dead Or Alive" looks like a Frankenstein gun, and in fact, was not really chambered in .45/70 at all so McQueen could handle in on camera...it was in fact chambered for .44-40 but Josh Randall (McQueen) wore the cartridge belt full of .45/70 because it "looked more impressive"

John Ford wanted John Wayne to spin cock a Winchester 92 in the 1939 movie Stagecoach so they made the lever large to accomplish it.

Yep,  pockets were on vests (called waistcoats) and suspenders were what held your pants up.

And those pockets were for watches.

also cigarettes and cigars..... and "shucks" from way back when....(cigarette rolled with corn husk instead of paper).  Reading old Sante Fe history, it was a common chore for the wife to fill her husbands vest pockets with shucks before a night on the town....:)

Getting desperate for stuff to watch on Netflix. I tried Buffalo Boys. It's a foreign film about two Indonesian boys that grow up in the American west that go back to their homeland to avenge their father. The soldiers there have trapdoor rifles that look like something hammered out in Khyber Pass. I mean these things are crude.

I agree with this.

Not every dude in the 19th century dressed like James Arness. Maybe even nobody.

If clothing in movies and tv shows don't bug you don't look at vintage pics.  :P Especially don't start researching and finding out when stuff was invented. You will forevermore be traumatized. *6'

Speaking of Arness...
I didn't really appreciate him, or "Gunsmoke" when I was a yonker...watching it today, I can see what all the fuss was about. It's head and shoulders above all the TV shows and most of the movies from that era, and Arness was one bad-ass dude.

Me too....that'll ruin things even faster than a buscadero gun rig. The belt wasn't a common article to hold up pants until the 1920's, yet they seem to be common in older westerns.

I watched a rerun of Seraphim Falls yesterday, the storyline taking place in 1868. It included an 1851 Navy .36 brasser, a Richards-Mason Colt, a brass framed lever gun, and a few others. Not too bad except for the Navy.

Also watched Crossfire Trail that had a 1876 Winchester .40-60 (supposedly) and an Evans rifle, among other long guns. The best part about the script/screenplay was when Wilford Brimley was asked why he had the Evans. The reply was that it held 28 shots and he was not a good rifle shot. Got a kick out of that.

Mind you, Arness was  Norwegian immigrant, so what do you expect?
