Colt SAA and clones
« on: March 09, 2020, 11:01:59 AM »
What is it about the Colt SAA that keeps us going?  There’s lots of handguns around but nothing compares to a SAA.  The clones Uberti, Pietta, Ruger etc.  all are single action western style that appeals to many of us. Even as kids playing cowboy required a western gun and holster.  I still have the holster 60 years later.   Nothing else ic a SAA.
The style began with colts Patterson models.
However I don’t see many at the shooting range I use. The only reason they don’t have one is because they haven’t tried one. (Opinion)

To answer my own question. When I was young many decades ago most TV heroes we’re western men. Horseback cowboys.
We weren’t afraid to watch them as the level of violence was low. There were many of them “The Lone Ranger”, “Roy Rogers”
Bronco Lane, the Virginian,  wagon Train, etc. So many to list. We could watch the all.
I don’t want my grand son to watch the current crop of overly violent shows.

I agree, the SAA is a fantastic six-gun. And you're right, we all grew up watching the shows and movies, that inspired us to plat with cowboy guns. But for me, the cap and ball Colts hold more favor.

They are just more elegant in my eyes. Don't get me wrong, I love shooting a SAA too. But the Army and Navy cap and ball pistols always get the nod.

The Colt SAA is a nice clean, simple and trim design that is pleasing to the eye.

Yessir! Mine too. I love my Dragoons and wouldn't trade them for a SAA clone.

I had one of those once, they are fine and impressive, but I tried to carry it in a belt holster and it kept dragging my pants down.  I agree with the general consensus here that the Colt SAA design in general is beautiful.  I now have two 1860 Army's and a Ruger Vaquero.

I like the SAA.....and really like my BP revolvers......but my true love are the conversion guns.....from the twilight zone transition time when only the rich and the army had the SAA. I can't remember the exact numbers, but I believe a new SAA was about 3 months wages, but having your old revolver converted was about 2 weeks pay.

I like the SAA best and the 51 navy second best, altho if I had a 61 navy I might like it better than the 51. Not likely but I might. I am a sucker for an octagonal barrel. I had a dragoon but just didn't care for it much.

I still have the SAA cap gun I had as a kid! Guess that may have started it all.

OK, I hear you. Since "no picture=never happened" here it is. I thought I had pictures, but couldn't find them, took a new one.

These guns are ~75 years old! I also have a few toy cars and trucks that are a little older.
