Pyrodex loads in BP conversions
« on: May 22, 2021, 08:08:07 AM »
Hi

first post I have researched this site. as I advocate on other sites.

On other sites  I read some reloaders are using 44cal  30 gr pryrodex pre formed in their 45 colts,.

I generally use Unique  and lately I been getting great results with Trail boss,    I have plenty of Pryrodex "P"  I can not seem to find load data even weak data. yes looking for weak load data not hot

please feel free to  PM suggested loads in grains

Thank you

Jack

Hello Jack and welcome to Colt Country!

I have used Pyrodex P in .45 Colt cartridges with no problems. I usually load them with 30gr and they work perfectly. They are a bit "energetic" but not too hot to handle.

You could always start with a lower load of say 20gr and work up from there. Just put a filler in the case like cream of wheat to take up the air space in the case.

I've used Pyrodex in 44-40 with good results. The powder is chunkier than black but compresses better. It's about the same power level as Swiss.

Pyrodex P and RS are both to be loaded grain for grain (by volume, not weight) the same as black powder, if that helps,

Thanks for the input

used plenty of pyrodex in the hawkin & in line and in the  cap & ball

first time venturing into reloading metallic case with pyrodex,

I found the 30 grs of "P" made the pistol bark, I will try the 20 gr work up

I also received a PM  regarding using RS instead, I will try that also

Thank you again

Hello sprat,

I don't think you want any Air Space in your cartridge.
I'd measure the powder level in case & make sure your bullet will give you about 1/16" compression.

I've used RS loose powder in my 44-40's. It works fine. You do not want an airspace. If you use less than 35 grains or so you need a filler.
