61 Navy Holster
« on: May 25, 2021, 02:58:45 PM »
I needed a holster for my new Navy. So I got to work on it. Here's the finished article. I like the Slim Jim style and gravitate toward it. I also like a toe plug in my holster. I did this one kind of plain, but I like it. I think it'll do nicely for my niece's wedding.

Sorry for the lousy pictures.

In case anyone is interested, it's made of 9oz vegetable tanned leather and dyed with my homemade vinegaroon. It is also hand stitched with waxed cotton.

Your niece planning on a shotgun wedding, is she?  ;)

JK, Dave...I know the story! Just couldn't resist!

Fantastic job on the gun leather, BTW! Looks very professional!

Embellishment is nice, but I'm with the rest of you guys in that plain is elegant.

Clean, clean, clean! That looks really good. A perfect holster for that Navy. Fine work, pard.

Love that vinegaroon, too. Nothing makes a better black than that.

Thanks fellas!

A little backstory is in order I think.

My niece and her fiancÚ have been trying to get married for a year and a half. Every time they set the date and book the venue, the Covid mess screwed up their plans. They have had to keep bumping the date and have moved the venue twice. Well low and behold, they finally have a firm date for June 10th. My niece is a wonderful young woman, and a big 2A supporter. In fact, her grandfather is none other than Gary Reeder. If you don't know who he is, look him up.

Anyway, my niece asked me to wear my Victorian/Old West duds to the wedding and she wants me to wear my gun belt with a pistol. Long story short, I traded away one of my 1860 Army pistols along with the holster, for the flintlock I just got. My other Army is indisposed at the moment. That left me without a gun that I wanted to carry. When I got the 61 back a week or so ago, I decided it would be a good stand in. Except I didn't have a holster for it that matched my gun belt. which leads us to here.

So there you have it!

Thanks for the back story.
Enjoy the wedding.
Here's hoping you won't have to draw.

No worries, Doc. He can't draw. Can't read nor write, either. He just likes to look at the pictures.

That's a fine thing to do, Dave. Dressing the part is really cool. That rig will do it right. You'll have a lot of fun.

A couple of our friends got married in Tombstone in a chapel that was a brothel in the 1800's. I was the best man and my wife was the maid (matron?) of honor. We wore our old West duds and I had a single rig. It was a great time.
