My only black powder pistol.

General Discussion / Re: Which pistol do you shoot the most?
« on: July 03, 2021, 03:02:08 PM »
I only own one black powder pistol, a Pietta 1851 navy in 36 caliber. Thatís the one I shoot the most. That includes my modern guns. I shoot the Ď51 navy the most.

I clean my Ď51 navy with a mixture of 75% water and 25% Ballistol. I have heard this mixture called Ďmoose milkí. I lube my pistol with LSA and the arbor with synthetic grease. I like the smell of Ballistol!

I have shot a lot of Fiocchi .380. I still have some in inventory. It is good ammo. It is made here and in Italy.

General Discussion / Nipple Question
« on: June 13, 2021, 07:20:58 AM »
I have read that some type of lube should be put on the nipple thread after removing and cleaning. Do you remove and clean the nipples after every shooting session?  If not then how often? If you clean after each shooting session is the lube necessary and why?

I do a detail strip. Everything comes apart, including the nipples. After the strip is done I take the barrel, cylinder and frame outside to the water hose. Water is all that is needed to remove the corrosive salts. Then everything gets cleaned and or scrubbed with a mixture of 25% Ballistol and 75% water. I have heard this mixture called moose milk. This process takes me about two hours.

Percussion Caps and Primers / Re: RWS caps

Sun tiger, I prefer the slix shot nipples. I purchased nipples from Track of the Wolf and the size of the nipples varied a lot. Some caps were easy to put on and some didnít fit without a lot of pressure. No problem with the slix shot nipples using the same caps. I also have the stock nipples. My #11 caps are loose on them. When #10ís are available again Iím sure they will fit on the stock nipples.

I have three sets of nipples. With the cap shortage I match the nipples to whatever caps I can get.

I went shooting on Thursday. The soy wax/beeswax mixture is better in the heat. I donít think the barrel was as clean as with pure soy wax but the cylinder and action were just as smooth as before. There was no binding or drag when the revolver was cocked. This may be my wax mixture in the future. This mixture was easier to work with when I was cutting them out.

I made a new batch of soy wax pills today. Because of the softness of the previous pills in our heat I added beeswax to the mix. I use three parts soy wax to one part beeswax. I am in the process of cutting them now. I hope to take them shooting tomorrow or Friday. The temperature is forecast to be 94 tomorrow and 98 on Friday. We will see if the mixture works better in the heat.

I found this video. He crushed or ground the components before mixing them. He put more alcohol on each cap. He put hair spray on the caps after they dried. He made it sound like they were working for him. Time to experiment.

This is a picture of the pills.

I use the term pill to refer that it is a solid piece of wax, not something that is smeared on like Crisco. I melted the wax in a double boiler then poured  it in a metal pie pan. I made mine to thick on the first pour. About 1/4 to 3/8 inch probably would be better. I then cut them with a .357 case. The fact that some crumbling took place didnít have any effect on the usefulness of the pills.

So far so good. Iíve been shooting in the desert over 10 years and I have not seen any snakes. Lots of lizards and coyotes.
