Well, we haven't worked out all the details yet, but here are the basics:
We will be holding our first-ever Colt Country Postal Match in the very near future. All the details will be included both on this thread and via newsletter.
What is a postal match? Well for those of you unfamiliar, it is a paper target shooting match where you take a set number of shots at a target and mail it in for judging. The winner will be anonymously chosen by shot group overall size by category (see below) and the winner of each category will have his target posted in the Winner's Circle thread (to be created shortly)
Very briefly, there will be two categories, as follows;
a) 5 shots, offhand (no rest) at 25 yards
b) 5 shots, rest at 25 yards
Each of those categories will be subdivided into 3 subsections;
a) .31 caliber revolvers
b) .36 caliber revolvers
c) .44 caliber revolvers
For the sake of uniformity, we will only be allowing period correct percussion revolvers in this first contest. No cartridge revolvers, rifles or conversions at this time. You may use black powder or BP subs and either round ball or conical.
You may enter any number of categories you wish, one or all of them.
After shooting, targets will be sent to Shotgun Dave anonymously for scoring based on group size. Each target will be numbered for ID without the judge knowing who it belonged to until scoring is complete.
More details to follow, but first things first. We can use this thread as a signup sheet to put down your screen name if interested, and which categories you might be interested in so we have a rough idea. Admins of Colt Country, Collector's Forum or 1858 Remington may participate but are not competing for the win. So, show of hands...who is in?

I realize this is short notice, but with the onset of cold and inclement weather, we want to get our first match in this year.
-
I'm kind of excited about this. I can't wait to see who jumps in, and how they shoot. Should be good fun!
-
I'm in. All three, kinda interested in how my Wells Fargo will do at 25.

All 3? There are six total if you do both offhand and rest. Are you planning on shooting offhand, rest, or both?
-
Awesome! Our first contestant!
-
I will try to get in on the .36 caliber no rest.
-
Does off-hand mean one hand?
Is there a two-hand stance or is that considered a rest?

Len, offhand can be one handed, two handed, any stance you are comfortable with as long as the gun is not resting on any surface.
Hawg, we'll get you down for the .36 no rest category!

Both. Five rounds hardly worth getting it dirty. ;)

LOL! You can shoot it as much before and after as you like! We've got you down for six, then.

Most excellent fellas. This is shaping up to be a nice little competition.

OK. Next question: What size is the target (if I cannot get the right paper over here)? Would it be OK for a bulls eye on any old paper and an inch ruler across it for the photo? Sign me up for my original Colt .36, one-handed and two-handed, 25 yards and no rest.

Len, Dave and I have already selected a target that can be downloaded from the internet and printed on your home printer. This is for uniformity (all shooters using the same target). If interested I can provide the info for you.
-
OK, for those interested...
The target we chose for this match is available at targetz.com
It's on page 3 of targets, item number is 10036. I'll attach an image of the target to this thread.

You will need one target for each category you intend to enter. I will provide each of you with a random number to write on the target for ID, that Shotgun Dave will not know about to ID the shooter once the winners are chosen. You can mail the targets to him for scoring using only a return address (no name) so the judging can be totally impartial. I would recommend using a 8 x 11 envelope so as not to bend the target when mailing. I'll be PMing the random ID numbers to each member signed up very shortly. Rules are, you can take as many warm-up shots as you wish prior to shooting your scoring target, but once you start shooting the five shots, they are what they are. And being the gentlemen you are, I know nobody will print off a shitload of targets and only send in the best one...right? 'Cuz that would be pretty cheesy.
-
If scoring is determined by group size, would it matter what target you shot at? Witnessed or honor system? I think I know the answer to that one!
-
I downloaded some of those targets. I can see why you chose that one, it will make scoring easier.
-
This is like Hamlet's "words, words, words"
New question: when priting, what size do we use? Legal or A4 or anything else?

Standard 8.5 X 11 office printer paper. All that is really important is that the bull and grid size are uniform.

We trust each other around here Em! So the honor system is it!
-
I'm out. My printer has been down for a couple of years. Since it was just group size I didn't think the target would matter.

No problem. PM me your address and I'll send you as many as the groups you want to enter.

OK, it's on. Nothing hard about this, folks. We are making the entry cutoff November 30th, 2020 but have not yet decided on the cutoff for shooting. Kind of depends on how many of you sign up. One thing for sure; if you don't get your name in the hat either by entering yourself or contacting Shotgun Dave or myself, you won't be in it! So, come on and sign up!
-
Sign me up for this one. This sounds great. Both offhand and using a rest. .44 Caliber only for each category.
Does the type of Cap and Ball revolver matter? Does it have to be a Colt pattern, or can it be a Remington type?
-
Captain
Is this best 5 shot group or six shot group? I have Remington and Colt 44's, does it matter which one i use?

While a Colt will earn you more worthless points from Colt lovers...no, you may use any period-correct revolver with loose black powder and ball. This includes Rogers and Spencer, Starr, Paterson, Root sidehammer, and others with the possible exception of the ROA, which of course, is not 'period correct'. I'll throw your name in the ring.

5 shot group. Nope, you can use whatever revolver you prefer.
-
Somebody just asked via pm if it was acceptable to use paper cartridges...yes. They were in use during the period.
Also, the topic just came up regarding the Pietta Remington 'target model' and our judge has decided no, as it might give an unfair advantage. If that's the only gun you have, we might consider a handicap.

DL, are you "in" or still considering?

Sign me up.
.44 for offhand and with rest.
Thanks.
-
Yes Captain sign me up. I think this will be fun. I will do both. 44 off hand and 44 from rest. When will targets be due and where do i send them. So this is group spread. Closest to center or just group size?

You are in. Smallest group size will determine the winner. We have not yet determined a date yet for sending the targets...will kind of depend on how many enter and if they have problems getting to the range to shoot due to weather, holiday conflicts or other stuff. (@+
And Happy Birthday, by the way! )l_

Great to see the interest in this. Makes me happy!

Count me in, just downloaded and printed the required target. Put me down for Off Hand and Rest , .44 Calibre. Will likely shoot this weekend as it's starting to get mighty brisk up here in the Great (Soon to be) White North.

70 is the new 40. Just sayin'... L@J
I sent your random ID number via PM so you can shoot at your convenience.
-
How is the shooting going, gents? Anyone popped a cap on their targets yet? Also, anyone out there need random number(s) for their targets? I'd like to have all the shooting done by Dec 31st if possible.
-
Did some practicing yesterday (Manhattan .36). Didn't do very well. Grouping was within a 6" dia circle, high at one o'clock. Eye sight not hawk eye-ish.

Yeah, but...if you are the only one shooting in your category, you're gonna win! L@J

Bye the bye, I haven't received a random number

Not yet. Having some health issues. Hopefully soon tho. I really need to pop some caps and smell some real powder smoke.

Hope to get out next week. I'll take numbers at your leisure.
