Title: Rock Island: 1858 Starr DA revolver by Pietta
Post by: Smokey on July 09, 2010, 08:30:48 PM
he starr replica, the DA one anyway, has a rep for problems, but this is not Piettas fault.  When they copied the original revolver they left in all the original weak points.  They can get out of time, and so on, but I have had no problems with mine so far.  The DA actually has two triggers, the big one cocks the hammer and rotates the cylinder, behind it there is a smaller trigger that will release the hammer.  You trigger cock it, and then pull the main hammer back that last little bit to push the secondary trigger.  There is a small sliding bit of metal on the secondary trigger that when slid into place acts as a safety, when it works that is.  Shoots six shots with a .454 ball and 30 grains of FFFG, the top tips open with the removal of the knob on the side making cylinder replacement a snap.  Of all the cap, 'n ball era revolvers this one feels most like a modern handgun.  Pietta out did themselves with this one, the finish, and fit are perfect, and it is in perfect time.

Pietta does a very nice job on these more unusual revolvers.  I was fortunate to fins these two unfired in the wrong boxes on GB, sold very cheap.

I love the Starr SAA I have...jus' feels great and it's a lightweight .44 that works well after I got the bolt stop slots opened up a hair.
Here's mine.
