Forum Donations / Thank you
« on: September 08, 2018, 06:48:26 AM »
I would like to thank those of you who responded to my request for financial help with operational costs during a time of personal hardship.

Nothing is expected or required as a member of this forum, yet you are one of a small number who came forward and contributed toward the cause. You can rest assured that your contribution helped keep the forum going at a time when I could not. I am deeply appreciative of you.

I have contacted those who I know by name and those I could find  email addresses on within the PayPal contact information.

Yet there are a few that I could not identify. When I have access to a computer online, I will try again to retrieve contact email addresses in PayPal. At this time, my internet access is limited to a phone.

Whether I have been able to contact you or not, I do want to acknowledge and thank you.

Thanks again,
AKA - Smokey

Forum Donations / Re: Potential Forum Crisis
« on: August 16, 2018, 08:18:58 AM »
Much gratitude to the ones who have helped.

I am working to insure that this type of thing will not happen again.

The objective was to meet the immediate need. This has been surpassed.

Any surplus will be used to help purchase yearly hosting, so this will not happen again.

And if there is extra money left, it can be used to purchase ssl certificates, which will increase forum security.

Forum Donations / Potential Forum Crisis
« on: August 15, 2018, 12:24:10 PM »
There is a financial crisis that involves and

I have a financial crisis that will not be resolved until October 31, which is the date of my next substantial income. Until then, my highest priority is providing the necessary essentials for my family, which is challenging enough. I do not foresee sufficient income for this, much less being able to resolve the added financial requirements of maintaining and operating our online presence.

I am a state employee working at our local high school. We are shutdown for the summer without any income and our money is rapidly running out. I usually make ends meet by doing various jobs, but I am  under doctor’s orders to take it easy for now.

Since internet access is not the highest priority, I may have to let our home internet service go. So I will not be online often, but will stop in as often as possible to ensure this forum and its sister forums are operational online without any issues.

If anyone is led to do so, please help with our forum hosting costs, Please do not act out of a sense of obligation. Nothing is expected of anyone.

I assume the donation link on the home page is operational.

General Discussion / Cabela's affiliate links
« on: June 03, 2018, 05:17:57 PM »
Most members do not use the Cabela's links on these forums, but the same deal is offered here as any other Cabela's link or directly from Cabela's. It is much appreciated when members order through our links. The payoff is small, 3 percent or so, but the revenue helps with operational costs.
I find members posting affiliate links from other forums, members bragging about their purchase and posting other forum's affiliate links to their purchased products. Members and guests from Black Powder Smoke or the 1858 Remington forum, click the link and if they buy the item or browse and buy something else, the other forum gets a commission. How nice.

General Discussion / Regarding Login Security
« on: February 18, 2018, 09:19:03 AM »
Times are changing and so are security requirements for websites.  I am sure you have seen warning notifications here and abroad.  I'm shopping around for SSL certificates now. It is not so expensive for one website but several websites can be rough. There is a vast price range depending on levels of security. I will resolve it soon.
Best regards,

Hi Paul,
Welcome to the forum!!   :)

Forum Donations / Donation Acknowlegement
« on: February 17, 2018, 08:35:47 AM »
I would like to take the time to acknowledge all who have contributed to the upkeep of the forums. I am able to acknowledge some personally by tracking the paypal email address, but I have not been able to trace all of the donors. Another limitation for well over a year was having to use a phone for everything internet related.
So if you have contributed to this forum and you did not receive a personal acknowledgement, I do apologize and sincerely appreciate your help.

I'm sure you've heard it several times before. But how about increasing the attachment file size
lot of us don't use 3rd party software, for multiple reasons my camera is on smallest setting, still too big to post any pics.
Done!! Done here, and at 1858 and Colt Country forums.

General Discussion / Our appreciation to the 1858 Remington Forum members
« on: January 01, 2017, 11:38:56 AM »
For those of you who do not know me, I am Tim Lewis (aka Smokey). I am the webmaster and creator of and I would like to share my story which reflects on the quality of the character of the people of the 1858 Remington Forum.

The 1858 Remington Forum was created in 2010 for sharing knowledge, not as a place for me to run to for help when I needed it. I am ashamed that I let my life get so screwed up that in its seventh year, I had to turn to others for help, much less a forum I created in an effort to share what was a strong passion for me at the time.

I am glad 2016 is over. I hope it was a better year for you than it was for me. In the beginning it held a lot of promise for me. I inherited a customer base and struggling business when my boss passed away. My wife and I were working out at the gym, firming up and losing weight until I had a health scare that put me in the cardio unit at our local hospital.

When Hurricane Matthew hit us in October, we were in a bind. Our business which we had invested much money and time had fallen apart just before the poo hit the fan. Actually It never even got off the ground. Thank you to the following members of the 1858 Remington Forum that came to our aid when I reached out.

G Dog
Fingers McGee
Pine Baron
mazo kid
old fogey
Baron Von Kesselwalker
prof marvel
Blackpowder Jim
Wes James

After the storm I  had another hospital stay for a few days in the cardio unit. It was stress related. We never fully recovered from the disaster when this continued to fall apart.

Once again, I reached out to the 1858 Remington Forum for help.

My wife and I still have not received our unemployment compensation for time lost. I recently found myself with 3 hernias and am currently facing surgery. After I recover, my wife will face a similar surgery and recovery. I have been restricted in my activities with a car that needs major repair.

Then my wife loses her bank card and our bank account is wiped out before the loss is discovered.

During this phase of bad luck, many members of the 185 Remington Forum offered assistance. Many were the same that helped out the first time…

Baron Von Kesslewalker
Suzuki Bruce
Captain Kirk
Mad Dog Stafford
Pine Baron

One friend asked to remain anonymous.

I could not match up the PayPal emails with forum records on two friends. Without disclosing their entire address, I would like to thank Mario and Mick. Please let me know who you are here or by PM.  I now realize that these may have been from, where Captain Kirk posted an alert to our situation. Thank you, Captain!!!

Some sent checks and money orders instead of using the forum donation button.

I have made a lot of effort not to miss anyone, but if I have, please accept my apology and contact me.

In the course of the events and confusion and many computer problems, I know I have not expressed my appreciation to many on an individual basis. Please accept my apology if this happened with you.

I am in debt to all that helped us, Most have told me there is no need to repay them. If I am able to help any one of you with anything, let me know. Keep in mind, I build websites and will assist you in any capacity possible. We are looking forward to a brighter year and it is hard not to compensate those that made such a difference in our lives. We will arise from this and give back in every way possible.

God bless you all!

Thank you,
Tim Lewis (aka Smokey)

I just now saw your thank you. Do you still need assistance?

Thank you for inquiring. Things are pretty much back to normal for us. We were lucky by comparison to others and lucky to have great online friends.

Introductions / Re: A Much Needed Forum

I may be mistaken, but I do not think Dr. Davis has a forum. He is a member here and this forum was set up after he mentioned on either TFL or THR that a forum on percussion revolver collecting was needed.

Howdy Uncle Lee. Welcome to the collector's forum.
You mentioned the Voy forum, which makes me think you are looking for the Old Coots. You will find them here...
